I just bought a 920 and things were going great until I tried to get the latest map of Western & Central Europe. Using TomTom Home, I got a message telling me that I did not have enough room to get the latest map and that I'd have to delete files from my TomTom to make room. I immediately deleted the map of Western & Central Europe that came with the device. I still didn't have enough room. The problem now is that there is nothing left that I can delete (except map of US) to make enough room for the upgrade.
I need an SD card to make this work, right? I want to get an SD card with the most space so I don't have any storage issues down the road. What is the largest SD card that I can get? Can anyone recommend a manufacturer? Any thing else that I might need to know? Thanks in advance.

  • You dont strictly need an SD card. After full backups of the present maps, you can delete the Europe map and the cspeechxxx.dat files in the north american map folder. You will then have enough space to DL the new North American map. Your favourites will be over written, but you can restore them by copying over the mapsettings.cfg file from the NAmer backup.
Finally you will now have an old and new NAmerican map on your internal memory. You now have the choice of keeping that or in deleting the old Namerican map and copying over the Europe backup (without cspeechxxx.dat files) to accompany the new Namer 715 map.
However, its better to get an SD card for other data and for keeping multiple maps of needed. I even keep my old version 6 maps.
A-data 16gb SDHC cards from Newegg.com work for many people.
  • Am I missing something? Your instructions aren't addressing my particular issue. TomTom Home is telling me that there is a newer version of the Western & Central Europe map available. I was not able to get it because a message told me that there wasn't enough space available on my device. I deleted the map of Western & Central Europe that was on the device thinking that I would have freed up enough space to accommodate the newer version of Western & Central Europe. I was wrong. Now I have two maps on my device (North American and Guam). I still don't have enough room to get the new map of Western & Central Europe. Is there any way to put this device back to the way it was before I deleted the map of Western & Central Europe? Is there anything that I can do at this point to free up even more space so that I can get the new map of Western & Central Europe. I do not have anything extra stored on the device and I do not have an SD card in the device. What's left are the two maps and several small files which are either necessary for the TomTom to work properly of they are too small to make a difference in freeing up more space if I delete them.
  • Go read my post again.
I have told you EXACTLY what to do to solve your problem.
  • I read it again and it's still not making sense to me. Anyway, I have another issue. In TomTom Home, when I move the pointer up to Tools and click to bring the drop down menu into view and select Use Latest Map Guarantee, I get a message telling me that my new map is available. I click on Get it now and see that there is a map of Western & Central Europe. When I click on More info.., I see that the version is 715. The version of Western & Central Europe that was on my device before I deleted it was 7.220. The two remaining maps on my device are also version 7.220. Does version 7.220 come before of after version 715? Maybe I'm just confused with these version numbers. Is there a newer version of North American than what came on my device? If there is, why isn't it showing up under Use Latest Map Guarantee?
Is the version that is showing on the device (7.220) supposed to be the version of the maps or something else? If it's something else, that would explain why I've been so confused lately.
  • The 7.22 version is the version of Tomtom software on your unit, not the maps. The original shipping maps were 7.10 and the new ones 7.15.

Ok, that solves some of my confusion. Is there a way to view the version number of the maps on the device itself? Also, any idea why the newer version of the North America map isn't showing up under Use Latest Map Guarantee? Aren't I entitled to ALL new maps within a certain period of time?

On the unit, tap the signal bars of the satellites. You will see a version number of the firmware installed on your unit. Tap the screen where the version number is showing. NOW, you will see the map version number and the build installed (e.g, map is North America 7.10; the build is 1569).
In terms of being entitled to an upgrade of ALL maps.. that is a burning issue. Some who have contacted TomTom are indeed getting access to both NA 7.15 as well as W & CE 7.15. Others have been told, essentially, only one map gets updated using the guarantee. Seems to depend upon who you talk to and how nicely.
At least knowing that others have gotten both should provide you with guidance & motivation when you contact Customer Support.
  • It took me 3 calls and several email to get the 7.15 North America maps. Evidently the coupon that came with the 920 isn't being used and when I tried to enter it, got an invalid number error.
Then they insisted that I fax them the coupon and my receipt. I finally balked especially since the all 920s are less than a year old and all would qualify for the update for free. They set up my Home account somehow so that the next time I logged in, it informed me there was an updated map available.
I never even asked about the other maps as I will probably never use them and the hastle of getting this one was more than any customer should have to go through.

The hassle is worth it, I got both!
Did not need to fax, just sent electronic receipt and typed the coupon number in the email.
BOTH new maps are sweet. The Europe maps tidies up West Europe and overhauls East. Europe.
The US maps add new data and speed limit info.
VERY significant for a quarterly rollover. It will get better later on too, as I am sure more Mapshare data will be passed to TA or somehow incorporated in the TT compression process in the future.

You need to upgrade to the newer operating system (NavCore) version 7.221 (its free and should be offered to you when you hit update my Go in the HOME software).
Just buy a big SDHC card (minimum 4gb) to get the extra space and avoid the hassle. Sandisk UltraII 4gb from Costco works great and costs $40. A-Data from Newegg.com will cost about $75 for a whopping 16gb.
  • infama,
How do I download into the SD card? Would it try to download into the 2GB internal memory first then if it is full, it will download into the SD card?
Sorry for the newbie questions but the manual is useless.
  • I read it again If you have an SD card that will allow writing to, (not just reading..like the Sandisk ultra 2 4gb), then when U connect the device to the PC and start HOME, the software will ask you which memory you want to use. If you have a bigger card that only allows reading, then you had best copy stuff from the internal memory to the SD card (with a card reader) and download directly to the internal memory. After you can move arund files between the internal memory and the SD card.
What you really need to know is that either map can work from either memory, as long as the entire map folder is copied over and kept intact.
  • What is the folder name where the internal maps are located? Will inserting the SD card show up as a new folder or drive?

The map folders have the same name os the continents, eg North_America and Western_Central_Europe or some variation of that.
As TT is programmed in Linux, you can copy files and folders as you would any other data.
When you connect the device with the SD card in it to the PC, both devices should be recognized. However, some of the bigger cards dont allow writing to them when in the 920. You would need to insert them in a SDHC card reader (sometimes sold with the cards) and connect to the PC and then drag and drop files and folders. In the case of the Sandisk I mentioned, it works flawlessly and you can use it fully in the 920. All these cards should be formatted in Windows as FAT32, if they dont come already pre-formatted like this.
  • From the sounds of it, I did the same thing. Have you had any luck installing your new map. I read throught the advise you were given, however I'm not the greatest with computers so I really don't understand. I bought a 4GB memory stick and my TT shows it on the unit but I can't access it from my TT GO. Any help would be great as I live in Europe and need to use my TT soon.
